Asal Nouri, PhD, is a cognitive neuroscientist and faculty member at Florida Atlantic University, specializing in complex systems and brain sciences. She earned her PhD through FAU’s highly selective Graduate Neuroscience Training Program (GNTP), which collaborates with the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and Scripps Research Institute. During her doctoral training, Asal completed research rotations across multiple labs, including the Visual Attention, Perception, and Memory Lab, the Machine Perception and Cognitive Robotics Lab, and Bolton’s Lab at Max Planck Florida Institute, gaining experience in human EEG experiments, deep learning models of perception, and invasive electrophysiology.

She ultimately focused on human EEG research in the VAPM Lab, publishing two peer-reviewed studies and a preprint, with her dissertation featured in Journal of Neuroscience, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Cell. Her research explores the neural mechanisms of attention and working memory, examining how sensory representations are prioritized and utilized in higher-level cortical areas to guide memory-driven behavior, and comparing these processes to artificial intelligence systems.

In addition to her research, Asal has served as president of the Graduate Neuroscience Student Organization and recently joined the Social Neuroscience Lab as a postdoctoral fellow. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Texas at Arlington and a certificate in International Quantitative EEG. Beyond the lab, Asal enjoys volleyball and shares her home with a cat and a bird.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience and determination. After being hit by a truck and facing the possibility of having my leg amputated, I could have given up, but I chose to push forward. Going back to school despite that challenge taught me the value of perseverance and the strength that comes from refusing to let circumstances define you.
